SME ADVISORY | TALENT ACQUISITION

How SMEs Can Compete with Big Companies for Talent

Small and medium-sized businesses compete against large organisations with recognisable brands, substantial recruiting budgets, attractive benefits and established graduate programmes. They cannot always match those employers on pay or name recognition, but they have strengths that can appeal to the right candidates.

1. Sell the opportunity to develop multiple skills

Employees in smaller companies may work across several disciplines. A marketing hire might gain experience in campaigns, analytics, customer research and commercial strategy. Be careful to distinguish genuine development from overloading one person with several unsupported jobs.

2. Highlight direct access to decision-makers

Working with founders and senior executives exposes people to strategic decisions, negotiations and the practical challenges of running a business. That proximity can accelerate learning.

3. Show the company, not just the vacancy

A founder introduction video, real team photographs, employee interviews and examples of completed work often communicate more than generic recruitment advertising. Authenticity matters more than expensive production.

4. Explain the impact of the role

A hire in a smaller company may shape an entire function and see how their work influences clients, operations and revenue. Make those contributions explicit in job advertisements and interviews.

5. Offer flexibility where operationally possible

Hybrid arrangements, flexible hours and results-oriented management can differentiate a smaller employer, provided they align with business needs and employment law.

6. Recruit faster and more personally

Clear interviews, direct access to the hiring manager and prompt decisions can help SMEs win candidates before larger employers complete their processes.

7. Be transparent about pay and progression

Explain salary, benefits, reporting lines and realistic development prospects. Do not compensate for lower pay with vague promises about equity or promotion. Fair remuneration still matters.

The objective is not to imitate a multinational. It is to show why joining a smaller growing business can be a rewarding choice.
