AI & HR TRANSFORMATION

AI in HR: Beyond CV Screening and Job Descriptions

Artificial intelligence is rapidly entering the HR function. Most discussions still focus on writing job descriptions, screening CVs, preparing interview questions and drafting communications. These are useful productivity improvements, but they barely scratch the surface.

Some of the most valuable opportunities lie in complex HR projects that traditionally require extensive manual analysis, significant resources and expensive external expertise. The use-cases below are both as on-offs or can be within an agentic AI framework with recurring tasks, monitoring and decision-making automation.

1. Building competency frameworks

AI can analyse job families, role descriptions, strategy and external standards to propose consistent technical, behavioural and leadership competencies. HR teams and functional leaders must validate those recommendations and translate them into proficiency levels, assessment criteria and development pathways.

2. Workforce planning and scenario modelling

Instead of a static manpower plan, organisations can model different business scenarios. What if revenue grows 20%, a project is delayed or automation reduces manual workload? AI can analyse staffing data, operational demand, productivity assumptions and attrition to develop alternative workforce models. Their reliability depends on the underlying data and assumptions.

3. Policy and governance management

With suitable safeguards, AI can compare internal policies with approved regulatory references, identify contradictions and flag potentially outdated provisions. This is useful in multi-jurisdiction organisations, but legal interpretation and compliance decisions still require qualified human review.

4. Developing relevant training programmes

Companies can use approved internal documentation, procedures and technical manuals to draft structured learning modules, assessments, role-specific lessons and simulations. This allows more relevant training than relying exclusively on generic courses.

Where should HR teams start?

Select one meaningful business problem, measure its current cost, time and quality, then test an appropriately controlled pilot. Employee confidentiality, data privacy, output accuracy and human oversight should be addressed from the outset. Do not upload sensitive HR data to unapproved AI systems.

AI should help HR teams perform more complex work, not simply automate administrative tasks.
